Malawi Flood Response
This January, Malawians have experienced some of the worst flooding on record. It is estimated that 200,000 people have been displaced, 200 people have perished, and 20,000 people have been stranded - including some in one of our partner communities, Katola. Over 400 schools have been destroyed, including the roof being blown off of one of our partner schools, Mkoma Full Primary School.
World Camp has been in contact with community partners, the former president, Joyce Banda, and the office of the Vice President which is coordinating response efforts. We believe the best way to aid in the response efforts is to work through the government of Malawi's response system.
The government of Malawi has been responding to the disaster to the best of its ability, coordinating the efforts of many NGOs and managing donations from international organizations. We have registered with the Vice President's office to begin this process.
World Camp is operating this fundraiser as a way to enable World Campers to participate in the response efforts to the flood. With your help, here's what we plan to do:
- Collect money specifically for the response efforts
- At the conclusion of the fundraiser, we will meet with coordinators at the Vice President's office to learn what items are most-needed for the national response at that time
- Procure the most-needed items
- Donate the items to the national response effort through the Vice President's office
